Sharks collect food for others

Students moving canned food
Students at Chaparral Elementary School collected more than 9,000 cans of food to help those in need.

Collections began Nov. 7 and ended on Nov. 18. Led by the kindergarten classes, the school-wide effort resulted in 9,365 cans of food donated to St. Vincent de Paul. The service project began at the school several years and continues to grow, with this year’s collection being the largest ever.

“Our students were so proud to bring in canned food items knowing that they were doing their part to help those less fortunate. For the last week we have watched students, and parents, lugging in bags and even boxes of canned goods.  Our students, staff, and parents quickly rallied to help us surpass our goal this year and I can’t wait to see what we will do next year!” Principal Kristine Hanson said.
