HUSD seniors named National Merit Finalists
Three Higley Unified School District seniors have advanced as finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The students are: Higley High’s AnaLisa Ortiz and Brooke Lindsey; and Williams Field’s Emily Knight.
Last fall, they were among the 16,000 students nationwide named as semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students all received this honor through academic excellence achieved on the 2015 Preliminary SAT (PSAT) qualifying exam. They represent less than 1 percent of the high school seniors nationwide.
After achieving semi-finalist status, the students completed an application detailing their academic records, school leadership and community involvement, and submitted it along with an essay and recommendations.
As finalists, they now can compete for about $33 million in scholarships.
Ortiz plans to attend the University of New Mexico. Lindsey and Knight are undecided.
