Student council brings Buddy Bench to HTA

Higley Traditional Academy recently installed a Buddy Bunch on the campus playground.

Students who need a buddy to play with during recess can sit on the bench so another student will see them, come over and invite them to play.

“It is supposed to build friendships on the playground,” sixth-grade teacher Marcella Schorr said.

The Buddy Bench was funded by the Higley Traditional Academy Student Council, which consist fourth- through sixth-grade students. The school held a yearbook party last year where students could by signature pages to help fund this project.

“The bench builds community within the kids and spark friendships,” 6th grade teacher Hope Larson said.

The Student Council sold t-shirts and glow sticks during last year’s fall carnival to raise money for the bench.

“There was a bunch of kids playing alone on the playground and it was really sad,” former Vice President of Student Council Megan Baggs said. “The bench really helped the kids out a lot.”
