Early Childhood Opportunities

The Higley Unified School District prides itself on providing quality educational experiences. We feel that enriched early childhood environments not only provide extraordinary opportunities for young children but also form the foundation for a successful educational career. Our district has early childhood tuition-based program options that are housed at each of our middle school campuses. These programs have certified educators who teach our youngest students new skills, foster excitement for learning and develop a sense of belonging. The goal of our programs is to bring teachers, parents and the community together with a common vision to enhance the lives of children and to prepare them for academic success for years to come. Below is specific information about each of these programs. To learn more about either program or to register, please contact our schools: the Elona P. Cooley Early Child Development Center at (480) 279.8400 or the Sue Sossaman Early Child Development Center at (480) 279.8600.

In our Brilliant Beginnings classrooms for 3s and 4s, we utilize the Read, Play, Learn Curriculum used along with the Arizona Early Learning Standards. Activities and lessons are planned around age appropriate literature and include everyday experiences. This program is based on the concept that children learn by exploration and play. Classroom routines encourage active involvement, meaningful experimentation and reinforcement through repetition.

The Curriculum is both academic and developmental with activities to support gross and fine motor skills, self-help, socialization, communication and cognition skills. Our preschool program runs five days a week and has morning, afternoon and full-day sections. Before- and after-school care is also available.

Our Kindergarten Prep classrooms provide a nurturing and child-centered environment that is designed for 4- and 5-year-olds as the ideal foundation for preparing a child to enter kindergarten the following year. This program offers an academic focus that is developmentally appropriate and fosters a love of learning. The curriculum for K-Prep is thematic in nature and integrates all subject areas. This provides a solid foundation for inquiry that challenges each student and provides developmentally appropriate educational experiences for your child's intellectual, social, emotional, creative and physical development.

This program runs five days a week with morning, afternoon and full-day sections. To enroll in the Kindergarten Prep program, students must be 4 years of age by August 31st of the school year.

In Higley, we are proud of our highly trained special education staff that provides services for our preschool through high school students.  Special education uses instructional models and programming to meet the unique needs of a student with a disability. Appropriate services are provided for eligible students. Higley provides a full-continuum to meet the diverse needs of each and every student.

Athletics

We strive to offer a Championship Experience for all student athletes partaking in our sports programs. While we know that not every student athlete will have the opportunity to participate on a championship team as they progress through school, we take great pride in offering a Championship Experience.  This experience includes a positive introduction to school athletics, perseverance, goal setting, achievement of goals, commitment, work ethic, discipline, teamwork, interdependence and sportsmanship. We offer a full complement of sports. Seventh and eighth grade boys have basketball, soccer, flag football, cross-country and baseball to chose from. Our seventh and eighth grade girls are offered softball, volleyball, cross country, soccer and basketball. The experience is most effective when coaches, administrators, parents, volunteers and the student athletes all understand their role and realize the importance they play in the process. We hope you will decide to join the team and become a part of the Championship Experience.
