Dear Cortina Families,

Welcome back to the 2016-17 school year at Cortina Elementary School! We hope you had a fantastic summer and we look forward to your return. Our theme for the upcoming school year will be, “Decade of Excellence". We will be looking back on our first ten years of existence(2006-2016) and reflecting and refining our practices to ensure that we stay focused on your child's learning and serving our community to its fullest.

We will also be continuing our focus on Growth Mindsets, encouraging our students to solve things on their own and struggle through challenges in their classes.  As parents, it would be very beneficial to your child if you would help us support this effort.  This can be done by encouraging them to stay on task even when things are difficult, praising them based on their best efforts and not specific outcomes, and continuing to talk to them about their ability to improve at anything with consistent effort.  We will be working as a staff this year to help your children to develop a growth mindset when it comes to learning and in other tough tasks they encounter. Dr. Angela Duckworth calls this “grit”. I have attached some video links on Grit and developing a Growth Mindset. Parents who want to know, “What can I do to help my kids develop a growth mindset?”  Here is a free Growth Mindset Parents Course, now available at www.mindsetkit.org/growth-mindset-parents. It  teaches parents what a growth mindset is, why it’s important, and best practices to support their children in developing this learning belief.
